General Overview of Institute for Nuclear Research Pitesti

Institute for Nuclear Research Pitesti, other subsidiary of RAAN, is located at 130 North-West away from Bucharest and at approx. 2.5 km away from Mioveni City, laying over one square kilometer area, at 450 m height, surrounded by forests of Condesti Hills.

Geographical isolation of the Institute, due to the characteristics and importance of its activity, and the requirements regarding protection zones, have required the installing and keeping on operating of all the classic installations necessary for the utilities to be provided, for basic activities and for a proper operation of nuclear plants within the Institute for Nuclear Research and within Nuclear Fuel Factory.

The basic activity of the Institute is of national importance and it is meant to provide the development of technical and scientific capacity of our country in order to peacefully use nuclear energy. The option for nuclear energy has been determined by the necessity of environment impact minimizing, the necessity of energy resources providing, and electricity costs reducing for public consumers. The activities in nuclear field are done under a Quality Assurance regime and, to get the required authorizations, the Institute applies a Quality Assurance program, which is monitored by qualified personnel. There is personnel implied in observing the Norms on radioprotection and personnel implied in observing the Norms on nuclear guarantees; the inventory of fissionable nuclear materials is monitored by AIEA from Vienna, through combined balance areas defined by this Agency. The Institute activity is possible within the limits of nuclear authorizations approved under the documentation dealing with nuclear safety, quality assurance manuals, notifications by AIEA regarding the approvals of balance areas for radioactive and fissionable materials, physical protection matters, etc.
